Manga Pioneer Tokyopop Shuts Down U.S. Publishing
Some of you may remember that the first teen program at DeKalb Public Library was “Heroes @ Your Library,” a graphic novel discussion group that ran for the equivalent of 4 school years–quite a long time. The second time we offered this program, the predominant interest was manga, and I remember reading quite a lot of manga for these discussions.
Well, I have sad news. One of the most prolific publishers of manga in the U.S., Tokyopop, is closing its doors in the states. While Viz arguably introduced manga to the greater part of the U.S. in the mid-1980s, it was Tokyopop who took that momentum and turned it into a steamroller of popular culture and swept the nation with manga-mania.
But sadly, all good things must come to an end. Thank you, Tokyopop, for over a decade of Japanese comics. We’ll miss you.
